VITAL SIGNS TEACHING SERIES – EPISODE 6

Topic: Blood Pressure — The Balance of Spiritual Resilience

Teacher: Babalola Oladokun

Introduction

In the previous episode, we explored the pulse as a measure of spiritual vitality—our rhythm and  responsiveness to God. Today, we examine Blood Pressure, another key vital sign representing  balance between tension and rest—both essential for healthy living and spiritual growth.

Physical Insight

Blood pressure measures how strongly blood pushes against artery walls. • Hypertension (High BP): Too much pressure damages the system.

  • Hypotension (Low BP): Too little pressure leads to weakness and fatigue.

Lesson: Some pressure is necessary for life—but both excess and deficiency are harmful. Balance is key.

Spiritual Correlation: Living with Healthy Tension

Just as the body needs balanced pressure, the soul thrives under healthy, God-ordained tension. • Spiritual Hypertension: Burnout, legalism, performance anxiety, spiritual pride. • Spiritual Hypotension: Apathy, complacency, lack of passion or fruitfulness.

Ask yourself: Are you living in the Faith Zone—trusting God while moving forward—or the  Humanistic Zone, driven by self or paralyzed by fear?

Stretching vs. Lounging

Faith stretches you—it pulls you beyond comfort zones. Growth happens under spiritual tension. Too much comfort weakens the soul.

“When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8)

The Perfect Model: Jesus Christ

Jesus lived in perfect balance—

  • Lion and Lamb (Revelation 5:5, John 1:29)
  • Grace and Truth (John 1:17)
  • Power and Wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:24)
  • Judge and High Priest (Revelation 20:11–15; Hebrews 4:16)

He was strong yet gentle, firm yet compassionate—our example of spiritual equilibrium

Healthy Pressure Builds Faith

God allows pressure to refine, stretch, and strengthen us. As Paul wrote, pressure made him  trust not in himself, but in God who raises the dead (2 Corinthians 1:8–9). When life feels  overwhelming, don’t flee—lean in. Pressure may be your path to breakthrough.

Prayer vs. Work

  • All Work, No Prayer = Spiritual Hypertension
  • All Prayer, No Work = Spiritual Hypotension

“Faith without works is dead” (James 2:17). The healthy believer balances faith and action,  dependence and diligence

Conclusion: Finding Balance

Life in Christ is a rhythm of tension and trust, action and rest. Ask yourself: • Where am I overstretched and need rest?

  • Where am I too relaxed and need holy pressure?
  • Am I operating in faith or human effort?

True spiritual health lies in balance—where grace meets discipline and prayer meets purpose.
